Sugar! Kids are older, no more trick or treating for a while. Have a safe and happy Halloween. Just got through some drawings. Maybe I’ll unveil a few here in the coming days leading up to the gallery show, yea? This one above is a drawing study for a card I was hoping to have done for last summer. Creepy enough for the day’s festivities, no?
Be well.

The IonKids system from the firm Bluespan allows parents to give their young children some autonomy in the context of their environment?.to a certain point. The child wears an aesthetically pleasing Wristag that has the capability of communicating with a PDA-like Base Unit that would be near a caregiver. If the child wanders too far away, the wireless communication kicks in and the Wristag sends an alert to the screen portion of the Base Unit and the parent can effectively locate the child?s position. It seems like this product is quite an upgrade to silver bells on the shoes. Kits start from $199, you can order from here by Isla Verde

As the weather outside becomes a bit more nippy, this moment of seasonal change proves ripe for collaboration over the wires (i.e. from a nice indoor space). This was, in part, the inspiration for a new online, networked performance by UK artists Patrick Simons and Kate Southworth (of Glorious Ninth) and their collaborators Ruth Catlow and Marc Garrett (of Furtherfield). Documentation of their piece, which employed peer-to-peer instant messaging software and audio/visual exchange, via webcam, will launch exactly nine minutes and forty-one seconds before midnight (at 23:51:19 GMT, as determined by the length of the piece), on 31st October 2006. The performance consisted of a braiding together of spontaneous and premeditated actions, such as reading from texts, listening, and improvised speech. The result was a product informed by the risk of dissolution, a competition between voices, and an unrehearsed collective construction of tempo and rhythm. The artists invite online viewers [...]

According to artists Olia Lialina and Dragan Espenschied, ‘once a year, at the stroke of midnight, the ancestors of Rich User Experiences raise from the grave.’ Apparently, this occurs sometime around Halloween, considering the holiday weekend over which IGAC (Girona Art Contemporani) decided to launch the duo’s newest web-based work, ‘Midnight.’ Despite the artists’ heavy reference to now-retro web graphics, users traverse their their piece’s video game-like space using the newly ubiquitous Google Maps navigation cross. Along the way, viewers will stumble upon very tiny animated gifs, many of which are simple dots or geometric shapes. These barely representational shapes float within the sky of an eternal midnight, evoking the sense of ‘lost’ space junk resigned to a lonely orbit. Lialina and Espenschied describe the life of the aforementioned navigation cross in the same way, citing its presence ‘in a huge number of mash-ups to provide a localization interface for [...]

Gallery date approaches. Still working on some offerings for that day at Nucleus. I will be driving down there on Friday evening ferrying artwork so we can hang it the morning after. Then on Saturday, November 4 at 7pm the gallery will open to all viewers till 11pm. Complimentary refreshments will be served throughout the show. Goody.
Oh, let’s not forget that in attendance are the Three Flowers (as we’ve come to call them, following our wistful logic stemming from the 3 Trees exhibit)Wakako Katayama, Icco Sasai and Yoko Tanji. Tremendous illustrators and, as Ben Zhu (proprietor and dreammaker supreme of Nucleus) tells me, they are providing a prodigious amount of prints for all to marvel at. I’m getting [...]

Greetings – I recently [yesterday] received a request for intervention into a young [under the age of consent] man’s life who has skirted perilously close to the abyss create by Crystal Meth addiction. One of the issues, of course, is that in Canada, where we profess ourselves to be ‘Kinder and Gentler’, an upfront, in your face intervention is not legally possible. I have a very successful program called the ‘Walkabout’, so successful in fact that there are even folks who are not addicted applying to get on the trail. I am working to develop a new media based approach to intervention, the idea being that, as it has been proven with the trail program, if you can shunt the focus away from the inevitable spiral downwards, you can then work to restore that same focus away, towards a better situation. Any suggestions [...]
