PRETTY POLLY BILLBOARD (UK)

| monster | giovedì, novembre 30th, 2006

The billboard has long been one of the most powerful forms of location advertising. Just think of New York?s Time Square ? many a car accident has been caused be motorists loosing concentration because they?re attention hasbeen captivated by a ten storey high image of Madonna, Kate Moss or Calvin Klein?s latest sex-god male model. If it hasn?t already caused any accidents we?re predicting that this sexy new billboard ad in the UK for underwear brand Pretty Polly will have cars thumping into each other in no time. The six storey ad features a leggy model wearing a skirt made from real material which, when sent north by the wind reveals her sexy black tights. We love it. by Lisa Evans

FUNKY STROLLER – XPLORY by Stokke

| monster | giovedì, novembre 30th, 2006

In terms of design, baby strollers have come a long way in the past five years to the point where they barely even resemble the clunky old school push chairs of old. Nowadays strollers are about as hi-tech as a luxury car and just as good looking. The latest comes to us from the Netherlands (we?re not surprised). The Xplory stroller elevates your child so it can be used as a high chair. We?re loving its ad which shows the child and the stroller aspart of a funky, urban interior. It almost looks like an ad for a trendy clothing or sports shoe brand. by Lisa Evans

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::
The Sams
The Sams is a participatory experience produced by a Brooklyn-based team of artists known simply as “The Organizers,” who ask the following: what would be the effect of taking the most ubiquitous figure at Art Basel Miami Beach and duplicating him, cloning him—imperfectly—and releasing his clones into the night to create multiple incidences of art world confusion and speculation across Miami and South Beach?
The Sams engages themes of multiplicity, notions of identity, and the exploration of celebrity within its context. The project certainly has its references: the Situationists, Vanessa Beecroft, flashmobs, and [...]

Radical Roots

| monster | mercoledì, novembre 29th, 2006

Before software was the big business that it is now, the movement of homebrew architects and DIY programmers that ended up producing today’s CEO’s was spurred on by counter-cultural politics, an embrace of psychedelia, and an atmosphere of artistic experimentation. It was in this context that Stewart Brand made his now famous assertion (in 1984) that ‘information wants to be free.’ Glasgow-based curator Will Bradley took this dictum as a starting-off point in organizing the exhibition, ‘Radical Software: Art, Technology, and the Bay Area Underground,’ at The California College of Art’s (CCA) Wattis Institute, in San Francisco. Open now through March 24, 2007, the show’s title derives from the video art journal initiated in 1970, and seems to privilege artists of the 1970s and 1980s, with a few exceptions offering ‘updates’ on the way in which the spirit of this movement has impacted younger artists. The show combines artworks, experimental [...]

HOTEL BASICO, Playa Del Carmen, Mexico (review)

| monster | mercoledì, novembre 29th, 2006

It?s a brave concept for a hotel: modeling the entire aesthetic on the industrial oil rigs of 1950?s Mexico. Especially for one that?s ?moored? at the hedonistic Caribbean adventure playground that is Playa Del Carmen. But Hotel Basico – the chic offering from boutique hoteliers Grupo Habita – pulls it off with unapologetic conviction. The gist is this: the building, perched on Playa del Carmen?s exclusive Fifth Avenue shopping and restaurant strip, references Mexico?s rustic petroleum industry, with the rooms looking out onto a central mess hall-like restaurant area (note: best fish tacos in the ?hood). Above is a rooftop cocktail bar that features luxurious cabanas made from the back of old trucks with inbuilt mattresses and white-as-white cushions, two concrete petroleum tanks that serve as swimming pools (note: from the pool you can sip old-school margaritas and look down on the crowds below and out to the Caribbean, one [...]

The projects featured in the exhibition all reference a process of “translation,” be it in the sense of processes mediated by machines, systems of transcription, or communication between cultures. Taking different approaches, these works explore and juxtapose the layers of translation that inform systems of representation and communication — from cultural exchanges to machine mediation.

Around the World in 5 Days

| monster | lunedì, novembre 27th, 2006

The Upgrade is a series of gatherings of people interested in intersections of art & technology. Founded in New York by artist Yael Kanarek, the series quickly gained admirers around the world and there are now 22 branches of the Upgrade, internationally. From November 30 through December 3, the Oklahoma City branch will host the 2nd annual Upgrade International Gathering, at which artists from each branch will present their work and ideas, in a symposium, workshops, exhibitions, and performances. This year’s event has been given the theme ‘DIY’ (’Do-It-Yourself’), and much of the work embodies the spirit of taking the media into one’s own hands, in both political and sculptural senses. Andre Gonclavas (Lisbon) will present a sensor-based workshop and installation; Ela Kagel (Berlin) will lecture about the roles of artists, curators, and audiences; Tae-Yoon Choi (Seoul) will work with local resident to create a site-specific tour of the city; [...]

Cartier Holds Elephant Polo Match In India

| monster | lunedì, novembre 27th, 2006

The pairing of Cartier and polo – the sport of kings – should come as no surprise but the elegant jewelers have added an interesting twist to the scenario. Forget the horses ? it?s ?Elephant? polo at Cartier.Cartier became involved in the event to highlight the plight of Asian elephants, whose numbers are rapidly diminishing. Held in India?s ?Pink City?, the glamorous event attracted the crème of international high society and celebrities.Local branch of animal activist lobby group PETA protested at the site claiming that the event was perpetrating cruelty to animals, suggesting that the jeweler should stick to ?selling watches.? It?s a contentious situation and certainly harks back to the colonial, English Raj days. by Lisa Evans
