The Aesthetic Interface
9-13 May 2007
Aarhus University, Denmark
The interface is the primary cultural form of the digital age. Here the invisible technological dimensions of the computer are given form in order to meet human perception and agency. This encounter is enacted through aesthetic forms stemming not only from the functional domains and tools, but increasingly also from aesthetic traditions, the old media and from the new media aesthetics. This interplay takes place both in software interfaces, where aesthetic and cultural perspectives are gaining ground, in the digital arts and in our general technological culture – keywords range from experience oriented design and creative software to software studies, software art, new media, digital arts, techno culture and digital activism.
This conference will focus on how the encounter of the functional and the representational in the interface shapes contemporary art, aesthetics and culture. What are the dimensions of the [...]

On the last Friday of every month, archivist Jesse Aaron Cohen ‘opens’ a new email exhibition. The shows are delivered to subscribers’ inboxes, in the form of thematized collections of digital images. (Below is the root directory for these images.) Cohen is based in New York and many of the shows in his series revolve around immigrants to the city and diaspora Jewish culture. The current one, number 28, is called ‘Dr. Z’s’ and features scans of ads for ‘health, beauty, and wellness products and practitioners as they appeared in programs from various Yiddish theaters in New York between 1890 and 1928.’ The title is inspired by dermatologist Dr. Zizmor’s (Dr. Z’s) ubiquitous subway ads, as traced in the supplementary links included in the email. Each of the exhibitions features such extra info and is contextualized by a brief curatorial statement. Number 21 was simply called ‘Myspace,’ and the statement [...]

2007 Cassette Jockey World Championships
*** CALL FOR COMPETITORS ***
CALLING ALL: Cassette Jockies… Retro-Tech Lovers… Magnetic Media Monsters… Circuit Benders… Multi-Media DJs… Walkman Hot-Rodders… we want you at the:
2007 CASSETTE JOCKEY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
at the Make Magazine Maker Faire!
http://makerfaire.com/cj/
In 2003 at a festival in Chicago, a group of retro-tech geniuses organized The Cassette Jockey World Championships. Like the popular DJ (Disk Jockey) competitions with record-toting DJs showing off their turntable skills, the CJ Championships showcases skills and styles in the venerable world of cassettes. Since CJs were encouraged to hot-rod their own equipment, eviscerated boomboxes, disembodied tape heads, and overclocked Walkmans were the weapons of choice… anything that used the standard cassette as its ammo.
Now, in 2007, we’re hijacking the battle and hauling it to the west coast!
Forget DJs, this is for the CJs: The Cassette Jockey Championship is where YOU can show off your skills [...]

Peristalsis is Billy Reynolds’ first solo exhibition at Black Maria. The show illustrates the progression of Reynolds’ work. As a result, it has evolved into a narrative look at the characters he creates and how the pieces fit together.
Billy Reynolds’ fascination with the inner workings of the body inspired the title of the exhibition, Peristalsis, as it is the rhythmic contraction of smooth muscles. He distorts his figures, cuts into them forcing the viewer to look inside. According to Reynolds, “We are confronted with all of our internal intricacies, thus become aware of just how delicate and complex our operating systems are. And in this day and age, we often forget that we are ‘only human’.”
Gallery Director Zara Zeitountsian describes the progression of the exhibition as, “It begins with the classic story of boy meet girl, but we’re not dealing with boys or girls. To [...]

Inspired by such diverse sources as origami and jellyfish, this
remarkable ?floating? structure synthesises and channels different
kinds of technologies, from weaving to LED, to give a sharp new twist
on traditional themes. The designers have created a kind of urban
folly/cocoon that glows icy blue in the dark, like a giant, beached,
phosphorescent jellyfish. The crystalline structure is based on the
scoring and folding principles of origami, that most precise and
elegant of all traditional Japanese arts. For this ambitious,
self-build, public origami, plastic replaces paper. External walls are
fabricated from woven polyethylene cushions anchored in place by a
network of tensile members. Ribbed polycarbonate sheeting partially
enclosed the pentagon-shaped openings at either ends. Though it
resembles a floating cocoon, the structure only appears to be hovering
on the water; it is in fact moored to the base of the shallow pool. The
inside of the cocoon is a soft and enticing tunnel into which adults
and children alike can burrow and enjoy a [...]

Most people have fantasized about being a spy at
one time or another. Be it after a James Bond film or like me,
throughout most of your childhood. Well, here?s your chance to make it
a reality. Well, sort of. The Science Museum in London (http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/visitmuseum/galleries/science_of_spying.aspx) (and the Children?s Museum of Indianapolis) has opened an exhibition devoted to modern espionage. Created by Jump Studios, (http://www.jump-studios.com/)
the show?s conceptual aim is to offer an insight into spying techniques
and the issues surrounding identity in modern society. However, for the
more childlike among you, it?s the opportunity to see if you?ve got
what it takes to crack a safe and root through rubbish for clues. Built
upon various role-play situations, you?ll assume a new identity and
sleuth your way through seven zones trying to uncover a hostile threat
by the shady OSTECK Corporation. Yes, I know what you?re thinking. It?s
for kids and kids only. Wrong! The exhibition was designed for all
ages, so [...]

Dispatx Art Collective (www.dispatx.com) is now accepting proposals for full-length collaborative projects related to the theme in exploration, Appropriation in Creative Practice.
Contemporary artists regularly appeal to theory and philosophy as justification, premise, or point of departure. More recently some artists have begun to incorporate theoretical texts as a material for their work. This treatment of philosophy, as if it were cardboard or paint, questions perceived boundaries and dependencies between theoretical idea and creative practice.
How can theoretical ideation and structure be appropriated by different creative practices? What effect might this have on the development of work or on the creative method in general? Crucially, in what ways can ideas themselves be treated as material substances, rather than as jumping-off points or conceptual armatures, and does this alter their influence and status?
Full-length projects make up the majority of the Dispatx collections. The documentation of their development [...]

From 2004, Dispatx Art Collective (www.dispatx.com) has worked with emerging and established artists investigating the creative method – the organising process that translates creative vision into creative output. Dispatx is now a leading curatorial platform developing and presenting contemporary art and literature.
With over 100 published projects in six themed collections – comprising well over 2000 pages of original content – Dispatx Art Collective will continue to develop and investigate creative and curatorial practice via the commissions program for the creation of original work. Every six months we will commission between two and five projects investigating the theme in exploration.
For the eighth collection the theme [...]

Moliere – Trailer22-year-old Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, also known as Moliere, is not yet the writer that history recognizes as the father & true master of comic satire, author of “the Misanthrope and Tartuffe, and a dramatist to rank alongside Shakespeare & Sophocles. Far from it. He is in fact, a failed actor. His Illustrious Theatre Troupe, founded the previous year, is bankrupt. Hounded by creditors, Moliere is thrown into jail, released, then swiftly imprisoned again. When the jailors finally let him go, he disappears.Directed by: Laurent TirardStarring: Romain Duris, Edouard Baer, Laura Morante, Ludivine Sagnier

Have you already subscribed to the video feeds of ‘Karaoke Deathmatch 100′? If not, do it now, as you don’t know what you are missing. ‘Karaoke Deathmatch 100′ is perhaps the most significant project ever from MTAA (artists M. River and T. Whid). Well-regarded within the new media community for works such as ‘1 year performance video (aka Sam Hsieh Update),’ it is with ‘Karaoke Deathmatch 100′ that they reach an audience beyond this field. Unfolding over 50 days, the ‘Karaoke Deathmatch 100′ features both artists in an ‘alcohol-fueled blood feud […] 50 rounds of sing-along fury,’ to use their own words. Taped live over an 8-hour period, these sessions are screened everyday at midnight (New York time). One sees both artists–one singing, the other seated in the back of the studio–both in front of typically cheesy karaoke videos. Viewers can post comments on the performances and vote on the [...]

Kazu sits down with Newsarama to break a big announcement about a new anthology geared towards younger readers: Flight Explorer.
From the interview:
Kazu Kibuishi: I had been hearing a lot of librarians and booksellers talk about how much they wanted good comics for younger readers, and I saw how there was so little of it out there with the exception of Jeff Smith’s Bone. Flight always contained a high percentage of material that would be perfect for young readers, but the more mature content often steered parents and librarians away from sharing the books with kids…
…Up until just recently, [Flight 4] was going to [be] published as a 432-page volume that was packed to the hilt. However, it seems Random House made an error in their cost projections for the book when they gave the greenlight for the huge book, and they asked me to find a way to [...]

Speaking of addictions, if there are any DJs slash Toy Collectors out there I have something for you..
I’m trying to clean up the studio a bit when I remembered I had these guys hiding in the corner. They are a pair of custom 10″ Trexis that I did for the show over at Toyqube last year. I think they were something like $900, but I’d rather they go to a good home than gather dust over here so they can be had for $500.
This includes both Trexi figures, a mixer (it should work, it was new when I got it for this!), two small battery operated turntables that fit in the head (might need new batteries), and two dead [...]

Spatial experience comprises several related elements. Some of these are ephemeral and difficult to isolate, such as time, context alongside adjacent spaces, and human presence or absence. However, some elements more directly affect spatial experience; in particular, sensory data such as visual changes, aural motion, and tactile input have profound impacts on the way we perceive space.
Aperture focuses on the ways sound and light affect spatial perception. Multi-channel sonic textures, generated from recordings of existing spaces, encircle the space of the installation. A rear-projected ceiling is used as a display and light source, describing arcs of motion, intensity, and color. Transitions between audiovisual textures echo transitional places in architecture, places that deal with changes in scale, use, material, and [...]

The work began with field trips to five cities in March 2007, working with local communities to record local musicians, residents and ambient sounds that represent each city.
