[PAM] @ SCOPE BASEL – Regurgitating Histories

| monster | sabato, maggio 31st, 2008

[b]Perpetual Art Machine
The Future Was Then [PART2] Regurgitating Histories[/b]
Please join us in the SCOPE BASEL VIP Lounge to celebrate Perpetual Art Machine’s first show in the elite fine art landscape of Basel Switzerland and to commemorate the video art legend Nam June Paik. Paik was credited over thirty years ago with coining the phrase “The future is now”. [PAM] asks what that means today in our rapidly changing world by re-presenting an ambitious program of five specially curated video projects originally organized for Scope New York 2008 by Jarrett Gregory, Robert Adanto, Yiannis Colakides and Helene Black, Andrew Erdos in addition to the newest incarnation of the [PAM] installation and a specially curated section by [PAM] founders Chris Borkowsky, Raphaele Shirley and Lee Wells.
Special thanks to Scope Art Fairs, NeME.org, and IFAC.

SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING: STRATEGIES OF COUNTER-SURVEILLANCE
Saturday, May 31 – 5 pm
The Whitney Independent Study Program at THE KITCHEN
with Karen Beckman, Peter Galison, Thomas Y. Levin, and Lin + Lam
moderated by Yates McKee
In conjunction with the exhibition ‘For Reasons of State’, guest curators Angelique Campens, Erica Cooke, and Steven Lam will hold a panel discussion on the impact of governmental and corporate secrecy on life in our contemporary society and its manifestations in visual culture. The phrase “See Something, Say Something,” spreads the logic that citizens will benefit from policing each other. This panel, however, extends accountability beyond the gaze of the citizen-spy to also include the state. Who is responsible for withholding and distributing information? What type of information becomes de/classified? How can we take (more) control of our public access to knowledge?

Bang Your Head

| monster | venerdì, maggio 30th, 2008

Timed as a prelude to its southern neighbors’ 01SJ Festival, Berkeley Big Bang 08 presents three days of events and an exhibition of new media art at BAM/PFA and the Berkeley Center for New Media. Beginning June 1st, attendees can bone up on Lynn Hershman Leeson’s early period with an eight-hour marathon of her experimental videos made from 1977-94, view Jim Campbell’s wall-sized Home Movies (2006-Present), which depicts images from found family films via the barely-legible resolution of an LED curtain, or contemplate counter-surveillance with artist Trevor Paglan’s The Other Night Sky (2007), a science-museum-style installation plotting the locations of spy satellites. Bay Area artist Scott Snibbe’s Falling Girl (2008) will appear on the outside of the Berkeley Art Museum building, a silhouette animation depicting the dreamily slow descent of a girl from a skyscraper. Other events include a two-day symposium with artists and academics, and Black Cloud / [...]

Skol Summer workshop Series and Exhibition

| monster | mercoledì, maggio 28th, 2008

“It is precisely at the moment where one thing becomes something else that the action gets really exciting. That’s where the exchanges happen: chemical reactions, fistfights, osmosis, infections, kisses. Surface to surface, separate entities meet and make a border. The relation changes, the border changes. One thing to count on: it will never stay the same. Given the alternating violence and richness of borders, what strategies can we develop to better work with and across them? As cultural producers, how do we navigate this territory in order to create politically relevant work?”
As part of SKOL’s new summer internship, Gina Badger, Adrienne Mak, and Amy Novak are inviting proposals to participate in a six-day intensive development and creation workshop that will culminate in a collaborative exhibition. Participants in the workshops will be asked to prepare a presentation for a panel, help come up with activities and fieldtrips, and collaborate in creating [...]

Pictionary Poetics

| monster | mercoledì, maggio 28th, 2008

The newest exhibition organized by Threshold Artspace Curator Iliyana Nedkova, “Primary Ingredients” at Perth’s Horsecross Gallery, seeks to challenge the supposed superiority of words over images as a means of communication. She calls it “A fresh opportunity to test our assumptions that words have cognitive primacy in the brain of the viewer.” The show will premiere five new commissioned works by new media veterans Vuk Cosic, Alec Finlay, Clive Gillman, Katja Loher, and Valentin Stefanoff, and will be shown together with works by Perry Bard and Krassimir Terziev. Threshold represents Scotland’s only permanent new media art collection so it makes sense that Nedkova would invite these artists to respond to twelve pieces in the collection of their host institution. Cosic revisits his signature style of converting classic moving image works to ASCII text, this time shining the spotlight on King Kong. His contribution is posited as a precursor to his [...]
