Artistic Bedfellows, Histories Theories & Conversations in Collaborative Art Practices

| monster | martedì, settembre 30th, 2008

New Book
Artistic Bedfellows, edited by Holly Crawford
Released 9/28/09 Published by UPA/Roman & Littlefield.

Although the modernist notion of art as autonomous
has been thoroughly contested, the discourse of the
artist as celebrated individual persists. As a counter
to that, this eclectic collection of writings on
‘collaboration as a cultural practice’ starts from the
standpoint that collective approaches have been a
characteristic feature of artistic production
throughout the 20th century and that a rich cultural and
artistic interchange results from shared experience
and dialogue. Informed by contemporary notions of an
emergent ‘relational’ sensibility and participative
forms of social and cultural activity (such as the
worldwide web) the editor, Holly Crawford, brings together a series
of interviews, essays, conversations
[img][img] and remarks on collaboration. International visual
artists, critics, writers and musicians explore a
range of histories, discourses and theories relating
to communal, collective practices including FLUXUS, Zero, GRAV
and SPUR in [...]

sharedscapes – points de vue sur les paysages / points of view on landscapes
SHAREDSCAPES is an experimental shared space, a platform for creatvity, research and self-expression. It welcomes online submissions of texts, pictures and sounds, which will express your definitions of the concept of landscape.
The primary aim of SHAREDSCAPES is to provide a discussion forum for points of view inspired by the concept of landscape. Through the medium of the technological translation of material published online, its secondary aim is to create a 3D space or sculpture in real time. This will crystalise that material, seeking to bring together computer-generated images, chaotic/generative modelling and a “virtual reality” space. Little by little, a virtual landscape will develop. Its composition will not be subject to the physical constraints of a site (in concrete geographical terms) but to the technological exchanges of human beings virtually [...]

August Evening – Trailer

| monster | martedì, settembre 30th, 2008

August Evening – TrailerAugust Evening follows an aging undocumented farm worker named Jaime and his young, widowed daughter-in-law, Lupe, as their lives are thrown into upheaval. Lupe is more of a daughter to Jaime than his own children, and the two try to stick together… but change is inevitable. At the heart of the story is the conflict between generations. Aging parents and grown children have difficulty expressing both their love and mutual disappointment in each other. A father recognizes the unstoppable force of time and must say goodbye to his daughter so she can start her own life. The film is naturalistic in tone, featuring humming cicadas, ethereal music, chicken farms, meaningful glances, and rustling leaves. It includes subtle romance, gentle humor and heartbreaking tragedy, but it should not be depressing. Instead, we concentrate on the Japanese idea of "mono no aware," which is difficult to translate, [...]

“Do something” is a special progress bar that shows in real time the elapsed percents of my life. The start date is of course my birth day, and the “death” date was estimated using the male life expectancy in France (source : CIA World Factbook 2008).
I think this vision of time running is particularly motivating, even though some people may find it depressing.

Continually Redefining Game Art

| monster | lunedì, settembre 29th, 2008

No longer mere distractions cooked-up by programmers as a form of light relief in the early days of computers, video games have evolved into a variety of forms and have had a wide impact on multiple generations. To some extent, the same can now be said of art that addresses video games, the visual complexity and conceptual richness of which has grown with the medium. An exhibition guest-curated by artists Marcin Ramocki and Paul Slocum at Arthouse explores “the history, control mechanisms, political and art-historical implications of electronic games” by surveying both better-known and more emerging practitioners of game-related art, including Cory Arcangel, Michael Bell-Smith, Mike Beradino, Brody Condon, Alex Galloway, JODI, Guthrie Lonergan, Kristin Lucas, Joe McKay, Michael Smith, Eddo Stern, and Keita Takahashi. RESET/PLAY is up through November 2nd and is accompanied by a series of public events that includes a night of video game competitions and [...]

I’ve Loved You For So Long – Trailer

I’ve Loved You For So Long – TrailerLéa (Elsa Zylberstein) and Juliette (Kristin Scott Thomas) are sisters. Juliette has just been released from prison after serving a long sentence. Léa was still a teenager when Juliette, a doctor, was convicted of the murder of her six-year-old son. Life together isn’t easy to begin with. Juliette has to relearn certain basics. The world has moved on and she often seems confused. Although she may seem cold and distant, her attitude stems more from her being ill at ease. Helped by some, such as the kindly but tactless social worker and her open-hearted but depressed parole officer (Frédéric Pierrot) whose confidante she becomes, Juliette is also rejected by others, particularly employers who throw her out as soon as they find out what she did. But a huge questions hangs over Juliette’s renaissance. Why did she do such a terrible thing [...]

Synecdoche, New York – Trailer

Synecdoche, New York – TrailerTheater director Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is mounting a new play. His life catering to suburban blue-hairs at the local regional theater in Schenectady, New York is looking bleak. His wife has left him to pursue her painting in Berlin, taking their young daughter Olive with her. His therapist, Madeleine Gravis is better at plugging her best-seller than she is at counseling him. A new relationship with the alluringly candid Hazel has prematurely run aground. And a mysterious condition is systematically shutting down each of his autonomic functions, one by one. Worried about the transience of his life, he leaves his home behind. He gathers an ensemble cast into a warehouse in New York City, hoping to create a work of brutal honesty. He directs them in a celebration of the mundane, instructing each to live out their constructed lives in a growing [...]

Meanwhile, Juliette (Vicky Mclure) steals medicine from her pharmaceutical job in hopes of quenching her dreams of helping Africa’s youth. Light House Cinema, Dublin

| design - 2005 | lunedì, settembre 29th, 2008

Great surroundings will not camouflage poor programming in movie
theaters. No matter how swanky the theater, if it shows poor movies, we
just won’t go. Which isn’t to say that we have given up on
movie-theater design. We still wish that one day, somewhere, someone is
going to design a decidedly different, interesting and exciting movie
theater.Glimpses of brilliance are visible in the new Light House Cinema (http://www.lighthousecinema.ie/index.php) at Smithfield in Dublin, Ireland designed by Dublin’s award-winning DTA Architects (http://www.dta.ie/)
Of course, you really need to design — and judge — a movie theater so
that it looks and functions best when people are using it. So, having
not paid personal visits to the new Light House, we cannot say for
sure, but the images we have received of the empty space indicate that
the play of light, color and height works exceptionally well here.Light House cinema has been a bit of an institution in Dublin. It
started showing Irish, [...]

Analog Interactivity

| monster | domenica, settembre 28th, 2008

The Visual Communication Quarterly (http://vcquarterly.org) is collecting work for an upcoming publication embracing the theme “interactivity.” We are looking for art work that approaches interactivity from an analog perspective. Works made of paper, projects in which human communication is unmediated by the computer, or any other form of analog interactivity is welcome. As all portfolios printed in the journal, the work will be blind-peer reviewed.
This call for work serves a second purpose: selected works will be on exhibit in Los Angeles during the College Art Association annual conference in February, 2009.
To submit work, send up to five JPEG images of your work (or documentation) with a brief statement of intent to chanson@fullerton.edu by October 28th, 2008. A single zip/archived file is acceptable. Be sure to include your contact information (name, email and phone).
