One of the easiest ways to make a boring space more vibrant is to use
color. However, as so many of us can remember, obvious opportunities to
do this have been missed for decades in schools, universities and
hundreds of other places where young people are more or less stuck for
long periods. Luckily, todays kids have better luck at least in the
schools where Amsterdams i29 (http://www.i29.nl/) has had its say.i29 Interior Architects consists of two interior designers Jaspar
Jansen and Jeroen Dellensen and is known for clear, bold solutions. A
good example of this is their custom furniture project for a Het Veer.
It is a public school in Almere, a city located 25 kilometers east of
Amsterdam and often referred to as the most modern city in Europe. Het
Veer is a school for children with learning and concentration
difficulties and the objective of i29s work was to express and entice
concentration, playfulness and movement. [...]

Media-N: The Journal of the New Media Caucus – USA
CALL FOR PAPERS: Media-N spring edition, 2009
DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 14, 2009
THEME: Foreignness and Translation in New Media.
http://www.newmediacaucus.org/calls.php
Guest Editor for this special issue is Pat Badani
(Integrated Media, Illinois State University, U.S.A.)
This issue will deal with the relationship between foreignness and translation
in new media. We look forward to a discussion on the idea of foreignness seen
as an investigation surrounding notions of travel, displacement and migration
beyond those tied to the geographical movement of populations.
We are interested in the broad practice of translation in new media, in the use
of an electronic system that mediates and enables the movement from one state
to another. We also welcome submissions exploring the specific notion of
cultural translation and migration in new media. That is to say, we are
interested in a discussion on cultural markers that are displaced into foreign
and extraneous locations, languages, supports and genres.
The spring issue will expand the debate [...]

New Film Examining the Explosive Chinese Contemporary Art Scene to Screen During Art Basel in Miami Beach
Two clips:
http://open-player.com/blog/category/video-pick/
Robert Adanto’s The Rising Tide explores China’s mounting superpower status through an examination of the nation’s uncontainable contemporary art scene. Amid rapid urbanization, globalization, and decreased censorship, China’s avant-garde is dominating international art markets. Adanto’s film presents this incredibly complex cultural movement through a rich integration of voices and images. Screenings will be held at The Miami Beach Cinematheque on December 5th at 8:30pm and at The Colony Theater on December 7th at 6:00pm as part of Art Basel in Miami Beach.
Miami, FL November, 18 2008 — Robert Adanto’s The Rising Tide, screening this weekend at Art Basel, captures the complex cultural implications of the global art market’s insatiable taste for Chinese Contemporary Art.
Adanto’s documentary, recently screened at the UK’s China Now, as part of Constant Stream China08 at the [...]

Interactive video (video camera, lightbulb, display, custom software, computer, excerpts from the film Alphaville, directed by Jean-Luc Godard)
This piece includes 3 excerpts from the Godard film Alphaville, which imagines a world controlled by an evil computer named Alpha 60. The viewer stands in front of a hanging light bulb, reflecting the action onscreen. As the viewer moves the light bulb, the action is replaced by 2 other short excerpts from the film.
The light bulb element exists in multiple ways: as a physical object, as an optical interface, as a reflection on the screen, as part of the content of the film excerpt, and as a mask cutting through the layers of imagery.

Watchmen – Trailer 2A complex, multi-layered mystery adventure, the film is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the “Doomsday Clock” – which charts the USA’s tension with the Soviet Union – is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed-up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion – a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers – Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity…but who is watching the Watchmen?Directed by: Zack SnyderStarring: Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Carla [...]

Let Them Chirp Awhile – TrailerLet Them Chirp Awhile follows three twentysomething artists as they juggle their careers, relationships and emotions in New York City. Bobby (Justin Rice) is a struggling screenwriter who tries to get romantically involved with a woman by agreeing to take care of her dog. His friend Scott (Brendan Sexton III) is a depressed, womanizing musician with a sweet and innocent girlfriend while Hart, (Zach Galligan) Bobby’s nemesis, is a successful playwright whose campy play about 9/11 has won awards and a run at an off-Broadway theater. What begins as a quirky comedy about relationships and writer’s block becomes a coming-of-age tale about competition and self-reliance among the “me-generation.”Directed by: Jonathan BlitsteinStarring: Justin Rice, Brendan Sexton III, Laura Breckenridge, Pepper Binkley, Zach Galligan

The Colloquy of Things
Philip Beesley, Marc Böhlen, Natalie Jeremijenko
Moderated by Omar Khan
Thursday, December 11
7:00 p.m.
The Urban Center
457 Madison Avenue
This panel discussion will explore the growing agency of natural and artificial “things,” a theme being developed by the Situated Technologies Pamphlet Series. What are the social and technological challenges when “things” begin to be the producers and consumers of information? What are the opportunities and consequences of delegating greater responsibility and autonomy to technologies or natural ecologies? What conceptual shifts in programmatic and material organization will designers need to contend with when designing such architectures? How will the contingencies of context and situations affect the way they will function, communicate, and interact with people and each other?
Themes that the presenters will explore include ambient intelligence, underspecification, responsiveness, cyclic materiality, and emergent ecologies.
Tickets are required for admission to League programs. Tickets are free for League members; $10 for non-members. Members may reserve [...]

Adoration – TrailerADORATION speaks to our connections-with each other, with our family history, with technology and with the modern world. Sabine (ARSINÉE KHANJIAN), a high school French teacher, gives her class a translation exercise based on a real news story about a terrorist who plants a bomb in the airline luggage of his pregnant girlfriend. The assignment has a profound effect on one student, Simon (DEVON BOSTICK), who lives with his uncle (SCOTT SPEEDMAN). In the course of translating, Simon re-imagines that the news item is his own family’s story, with the terrorist standing in for his father. Years ago, Simon’s father (NOAM JENKINS) crashed the family car, killing both himself and his wife (RACHEL BLANCHARD), making Simon an orphan. Simon has always feared that the accident was intentional. Simon reads his version to the class and then takes it to the Internet. In essence, he has created [...]

Designed by Brad Pitts favorite architecture firm, the super-creative

Never thought wed say that about a dental office, (design/KU64—The-worlds-coolest-dental-clinic/) but what can we do? And why exactly is it that adults dental offices dont look like this?Kinderdentist (http://kinderdentist.com/)

In an era when popular culture shuns the mysterious & sacred for the garish & over-exposed, Alexandra Gibson cultivates a deeper, innate ideal of sexuality and eros. Her work expresses a genuine desire to explore the individual, to extract and expose the mystery of the spirit.
One could describe her style as a cross-fertilization of social realism and erotica, a distinct departure from the increasingly commonplace www-erotica that relies upon a simple algebra of nudity and exploitive pose. Gibson’s muses bare themselves in front of her camera physically and psychologically, exposing a nakedness that is far more than nudity. She documents the very immediate, captures the moment of permission, of [...]
