Like the Spice is pleased to present Jenny Morgan: Abrasions, a selection of the artist’s recent figurative oil paintings, the artist’s first solo show at Like the Spice and in New York.
In her tensely psychological portraits, all depicting people close to the artist, Jenny Morgan scrapes and sands away the top layers of paint creating wounds that are at once repellant, humanizing and technically masterful. Like drilling down to the molten core of the subjects’ anatomy, the areas that are worn away mark the paintings as more than portraits but also as bodily stand ins, as though if you disturb them, the wounds may open up and start bleeding. It is left to the viewer whether it will be [...]

The 5th edition of the Mapping Festival is coming!
The dates are set! From May 8th through the 17th 2009 the Mapping Festival in Geneva, Switzerland will retain its focus on VJing by highlighting one of its most progressive forms: taking projection out of enclosed walls and out on to the street.

Alongside this added focus we are open to proposals for lectures, workshops, audio visual performances, installations and clubbing nights that have punctuated the Mapping in its preceding years.

ENDEMIC BATTLE COLLAGE AND
OTHER 1987 APPLE BASIC POEMS
by Geof Huth
http://vispo.com/huth
Endemic Battle Collage and other 1987 Apple Basic Poems is a suite of
programmed, animated poems by Geof Huth. This work is discussed in Chris
Funkhouser’s landmark book Prehistoric Digital Poetry. Because this early
Huth work is digital and from 1987, it’s been unavailable for many years.
You can view the work as video at http://vispo.com/huth or download an
emulator and view the poems through the emulator. Also included on vispo.com
are writings by Geof Huth about these works and about digital poetry more
generally. And an introduction by me to the project.
This is some of the earliest programmed+kinetic visual poetry created. This
Huth work and bpNichol’s related First Screening at http://vispo.com/bp
exude the sense of excitement Nichol and Huth felt at this incunabular point
in the intersection of visual and digital poetry with the cinematic.
Happy new year to all [...]

“Ronnieversaire” is how Bibo Bergeron put it, he coined it and I’ll use it forever. Doesn’t it sound great? The above is a parking stub for parking off of Piedmont Avenue–this is today’s. Happy New year, all!
Bon Ronnieversaire! I asked my mother when I was a child the circumstances of my birth on a day when much of the world is looking skyward to the night sky than to any other human being next to them. I have many mixed feelings about this day and my mother’s details of the day were nothing special. She’d gone into labor at sundown and my delivery had obliterated any other detail inside the old navy hospital (my father was not in the navy, it was the closest free hospital to them) in Cavite City until I was smacked into crying wakefulness. Only then did she realize that the fireworks [...]

My storywriter friend Nykko just opened an official french blog concerning the Elsewhere Chronicles (international name for “les Enfants d’ailleurs”). You’ll find there sketches, drawings, previous unreleased materials, news, and a “behind the scenes” of the making of book 4 (due for November 2009 in France). You’ll find it HERE. (french language, but lot of pictures, so don’t be afraid)
Second blog dedicated to te Elsewhere Chronicles is the unofficial blog for the US release of the series (due for next spring, we’ll talk about that in a few months) hosted by Lerner’s editor Carol Burrell herself (thanks for that good job on it Carol). GO THERE !

Inspired by Lev Kuleshov’s film editing experiment in which he spliced footage of an expressionless man with other, presumably emotive vignettes. Audiences believed that the man’s expression changed when he “saw” the edited vignettes- although his expression stayed the same. It is believed that the viewers relate their own feelings to the images and then attribute it to the actor. This is called the “Kuleshov Effect.”
“man wit web cam” examines the Kuleshov effect as it relates to internet video, webcam aesthetics, and memes.

Wayard-Dream is an interactive Installation, developed from Internet-sourced material. It fictionalizes the participant’s display field, invites them to share their dreams. People may freely fictionalize in this space, share their dream with individual dreamland content they create. They create from the index, and remix their creation, and then it can be released back into the program. In the bodily space, the body constructs a phantom that affects the participant’s body.
Who is dreaming? The user, or the internet itself? In a certain way, both. The program generates a personal moving picture, unique, unpredictable, and forever gone when it is finished, just like dreams. But that dream is made out of pieces taken form the subconscious of the whole net, gathered by some words of the user and the obscure logic of searching algorithms.
The work presents a constructed model of an ever-changing cityscape underscored by electronic music. Participants are invited to [...]

This is a writing through a writing of a text that is largely considered unreadable. This text is a random regeneration of John Cage’s Fourth Writing through Finnegans Wake. To create the original text, Cage applied a system of complex rules to James Joyce’s seminal text, Finnegans Wake, to write a series of mesostics spelling “JAMES JOYCE” repeatedly down the page in capital letters. (A mesostic is a poem where a vertical phrase intersects lines of horizontal text). Cage used the same concepts of chance operations and systems based production that he applied to his music compositions, creating a writing free of intention.

Glowlab presents:
Mark Price, The New Real Fantasy Now
Exhibition dates: January 08–February 01, 2009
Opening reception: Thursday January 08, 6–9pm
Glowlab is excited to announce the first solo exhibition of artist Mark Price, titled The New Real Fantasy Now. Showcasing his bold graphic style, Price’s works on paper present dark scenarios of technological chaos and deconstruction. Moving away from the figurative and into the abstract through innovative original drawings, silkscreen editions, monoprints and wall paintings, Price reveals the anti-celebrity and absent hero: the Non-Character.
The story of The New Real Fantasy Now continues Price’s exploration and critique of economic and social conditions. Infused with a rich visual aesthetic, an introspective geometric landscape is superimposed by highly stylized explosions and cryptic language. Out of the wreckage the Non-Character triumphs, striking its suffocated poses and revealing that nothing exists in the territory of The New Real Fantasy Now.
Concurrently with his Glowlab exhibition, Price will release a [...]
