Call for Submissions
Staged: The Constructed Photograph
(Swainsboro, GA) – Gallery RFD seeks submissions for its upcoming exhibition titled Staged: The Constructed Photograph.
Countless photographers discuss the concept of taking a picture vs. making a picture and arguments can be made for either one. Can the constructed image tell us something the found image cannot? Does a photograph that was captured in the heat of a moment comment more closely on society that an image that was thoughtfully composed to have the same effect? Gallery RFD seeks submissions of photographic works that have been created, arranged, and composed from the ground up in attempt to convey their own truths.
Submission deadline: Thursday, April 23, 2009, 4 p.m. (EST)

Daniel Peacock’s acrylic paintings are a mix mash of puzzles, muzzles and fuzzy whatnots. Peacock throws in a bit of politics and a bite of nature with blue skies always returning. Somewhere in the story, taboos get a hair cut, pets get to vote and if you are small enough, something wants to eat you. Humans and critters of wild diversity inhabit a richly conceived dreamscape as if Fellini shared a peace pipe with Dr. Seuss.
Peacock, whose favorite color is periwinkle, “grew up” in the OC catching pollywogs that wiggle and watching things that jiggle. Peacock started painting after years of avoiding the subject, inspired by some old comic book whose origin escapes him. Currently, Peacock, a graduate of [...]

Sebastian Onufszak – Hyper World

| art - 2005 | venerdì, gennaio 30th, 2009

German graphic designer and art director Sebastian Onufszak (http://www.sebastianonufszak.com)
creates an intricate, graphic hyper-world, where colour and form
threaten to leap off the page right into your face. His detailed,
energetic work has earned him commissions by top brands such as Audi,
Bacardi, Sony, Jeep, L’Oreal, MTV and Nike. We’re loving his recent
work for RayBan, which has taken eyewear advertising to creative new
heights.Eyewear ads with no eyewear. We love it. We’d rather take in Onufszak’s
illustration than look at another boring photo of a model posing in
sunglasses. – Lisa Evans

Retail – Innovate or Die

| stores - 2007 | giovedì, gennaio 29th, 2009

Economic doom and gloom does have an upside. It has laid the foundations for a fertile new landscape of creativity and innovation. When the market gets tough brands have to work harder to keep their customers, they have to find more creative ways to engage them. Innovation becomes a must in the design process. It’s a case of innovate or risk a likely death. Which is why we predict a rebirth of creativity across product design, marketing and retail design. This new era isn’t about big dollars, it’s about big ideas and originality. Expect the unexpected. The Cool Hunter Platinum (platinum/THE-COOL-HUNTER-PLATINUM-New-Consultancy-Services-/) is working on a number of retail projects. We are looking for like-minded partners. Are you a designer or architect with innovative retail work? Have you seen a new store that you just can’t forget? We want to hear from you too. The Formulaic Nature of Appearances

| monster | giovedì, gennaio 29th, 2009

Nicky Nodjoumi
The Formulaic Nature of Appearances
February 19 – March 28, 2009
Opening reception: Thursday, February 19, 6 – 9 PM

Priska C. Juschka Fine Art is pleased to present The Formulaic Nature of Appearances, new paintings by Iranian born artist Nicky Nodjoumi. By speaking literally and figuratively of two worlds simultaneously, the Western Hemisphere and the Middle East, Nodjoumi evokes individual dialogues against a continuous backdrop of ambiguity, allegory and irony.
Nodjoumi creates large scale oil paintings using a visual narrative that combines Persian metaphors and Iranian iconography with references of Western and foremost American culture and politics. The inherent symbolism of Mullahs and Ayatollahs juxtaposed with that of suit clad Western bureaucrats suggests an extremely delicate balance between and beyond all cultural and sociopolitical boundaries. On his canvases, the struggle against tyranny and domination, both personal and universal, unfolds seemingly in front of the viewer’s eye. Nodjoumi directs a staged scenario, full [...]

Call for Submissions
Seeking Solitude: Isolation In Art
(Swainsboro, GA) – Gallery RFD seeks submissions for its upcoming exhibition titled Seeking Solitude: Isolation In Art.
Carl Sandburg commented, “One of the greatest necessities in America is to discover creative solitude.” Though artists draw inspiration from the outside world, a certain degree of solitude is essential for creative thought. Seclusion offers time for reflection, to extract the imagery and emotion our minds will conjure and convert them into artistic representation. Many an artist have created their most powerful work in isolation to the outside world, finding that in self-inflicted detachment they are able to extricate lost parts of themselves. Gallery RFD calls for works of art that visually reflect or have been created within the confines of solitude.

Curatorial Models for Digital Art[/b]
Edited by Christiane Paul
An Ahmanson-Murphy Fine Arts Book
University of California Press, December 2008

http://www.ucpress.edu/books/pages/10362.php

This anthology addresses the challenges of curating, presenting, and preserving new-media art—artworks that use digital technologies as media and emphasize process over object. As an art form that is inherently time based, dynamic, interactive, collaborative, customizable, and variable, new media art challenges the traditional art world’s customary methods of presentation and documentation as well as its approach to collection and preservation. Featuring contributions by prominent practitioners—institutional and independent curators, theorists, and conservators—this volume addresses the conceptual, philosophical, and practical issues of both curating and presenting new-media art.

Graphique Fanastique

| lifestyle - 2005 | mercoledì, gennaio 28th, 2009

Design’s love affair with bold colour inches one step further with the application of graphic art into everything from tables to chairs, bookshelves and even yachts. Cappellini gave Adam Goodrum’s ‘Stitch’ chair the color treatment with blocks or red, blue, white and black applied to the segments of the aluminium folding chair. Designer Enzo Berti recasts the humble bookshelf as a canvas for graphic prints with his Bar Code Street shelves. London based artist Anna James, who transforms pieces of 20th century furniture into contemporary art works, applied a clean graphic to her Genoa table. And of course who can forget Jeff Koon’s ‘art’ yacht, released last year, which is still wowing onlookers on the Mediterranean. – Laura Demasi

Cool Duo – ZZZ (It’s like Beethoven for the dancefloor)

| music - 2005 | mercoledì, gennaio 28th, 2009

Piano and electro should not mix. When the two do come together it more
often that not results in some low-grade piano-house cheese which
should’ve been left behind in 1993. Yet shockingly, key-twinkling pair ZZZ (http://myspace.com/zzzoinkz)
make it work. On their debut 12” record, Lion, the boyfriend/girlfriend
duo manage to marry thumping Ed-Banger beats with the trusty black and
whites, making it sound credible as well as incredible. The squelching
production is all punch while the pianos and strings add glam and drama
to the whole thing. It’s like Beethoven for the dancefloor. Something
you might call classical club, and not nearly as ridiculous as that
sounds. – Dave Ruby HoweLion is out now (http://myspace.com/banggang12inches.com).
